12. 준비 (Preparation)

손에 펜을 붙들고 생각하면 당신이 말하려는 주제의 핵심에 닿게 될 것이다.

“의인의 마음은 대답할 말을 깊이 생각하여도” (잠 15:28). 회중에게 연구하지 않은 생각들, 즉 즉흥적인 생각을 전하는 것은 텅 빈 수레처럼 그들을 모독하는 것이다. 설교자는 회중에게 자신의 많은 연구와 생각의 결과를 공부처럼 딱딱하지 않게 즉흥적인 느낌으로 전할 수 있어야 한다.

즉흥적인 설교라고 해서 즉흥적인 생각을 말하는 것이 아니다. 연구를 많이 한 설교는 당신이 말할 때 무의식적으로 나온다.

절대로 부자연스러운 자세를 취하지 말라. 정신적으로, 도덕적으로, 영적으로 자신을 준비하고 있으면 두려워할 것이 없다.

가장 중요한 것은 본문을 찾아내는 것이 아니라 성경의 포괄적인 진리 가운데 살아가는 것이다. 그러면 성경 구절 및 내용이 당신에게 기억나게 될 것이다.

“메시지를 찾아내는 것”에 대해 말하는 것은 실수다. 메시지 준비보다 더 준비해야 하는 것은 언제나 내 자신이다.

졸린 분위기에서 성경을 읽지 말라.

하나님의 말씀을 연구하는 학생은 그 마음과 생각이 하나님, 주 예수 그리스도, 성령, 구속, 죄, 고난 등의 위대한 진리로 바빠야 한다.

당신을 주저앉게 만드는 “나는 할 수 없어”라는 연약한 생각이 마음에 들어오지 못하도록 처음부터 차단하라. 녹슬고 게을렀던 상태에서 우리가 구원받고 성결케 된 이유는 과연 무엇일까?

즉흥적인 설교를 하게 될 때는 자연스럽게 말하기 시작하라. 자연스럽게 말할 수 있는 비결은 종교적으로 보이려는 자세를 버리는 것이다. 그러나 많은 설교자들이 답답한 종교 의복 입기를 좋아한다.

자신의 설교하는 모습이 어떠할 지에 대해 신경 쓰다가 주제에서 벗어나는 일이 없도록 주의하라. 있는 그대로의 당신을 그대로 표현하기를 절대로 두려워하지 말라.

사람들 앞에서의 당신의 표현을 개발하려면 혼자 있을 때 글 쓰는 훈련을 많이 해야 한다. 하나님 앞에서 당신의 문제들을 글로 써 보라. 그리고 그 모든 문제들을 주님께 직접 아뢰라.

성령께서 보여주신 위대한 근본 진리에 시간을 사용하는 것은 언뜻 보기에 시간 낭비처럼 보인다. 사람들은 ‘우리는 실질적인 일들을 해야 해’ 라고 생각한다.

준비를 한다는 것은 우리의 마음이 주의 영감을 받기 위해 주께 드려진다는 의미이다.

감사하게도, 영감이 의식되는 일은 거의 없다. 그렇지 않다면 우리는 영감을 우상으로 만들 것이다.

당신의 주제를 너무 세련되게 보이게 하려고 노력하지 말라. 자연스럽게 당신의 속성을 드러내고 설교를 통해 전달하려는 주제의 실체를 신뢰하라.

힘을 다스리는 훈련은 하나님을 섬기는데 있어서 매우 귀중한 자산이다. 이러한 훈련은 불안전한 숨가쁨이나 발작을 막아준다. 자신에 대해 발견하게 된 것들을 귀중히 여기라.

언제나 즐거움으로 준비하라. 당신의 준비를 기도로 마치고 요구가 있을 때까지 하나님께 맡기라.

설교를 할 때 확신으로 가득차라. 준비할 때 좋았던 내용들을 떠올리려고 애쓰지 말라.

주님께서 우리와 대화를 나누시며 성경을 열어주시면 우리의 마음은 뜨거워진다. 그러나 하나님과 계속적으로 동행하지 않으면 그 뜨거운 마음은 서서히 재로 변한다.

영적 통찰력은 마음의 청결과 비례한다.

우리의 삶 가운데서 성령을 근심하게 하는 영역은 주를 위해 특별히 경작되어야 할 영역이다. 그러나 문제는 하나님을 위해 우리의 삶을 경작하려는 의도가 없다는 점이다.

영적 나태는 성령님께 가장 큰 근심거리다. 나태는 무엇보다 도덕적 문제이지 신체적 문제가 아니다. 자아 만족에 빠지면 항상 게으르게 된다.

무엇을 말할 지 말을 외우지 말라. 오래된 썩은 메시지로 남게 될 것이다.

본문을 설명하기 전에 본문을 충분히 읽으라.

항상 독서를 하라. 독서는 말할 자료들을 풍성하게 해준다.

기억하기 위해 읽지 마라. 깨닫기 위해 읽으라.

노트 없이 설교하는 설교자는 두 가지를 자유스럽게 구사할 수 있어야 한다. 성경과 모국어이다.

언제든지 즉흥적인 설교를 하게 될 때는 과거의 설교를 기억하려고 하지 말고 설교 내용에 몰입한 가운데 입을 열고 말하기 시작하라.

주제의 핵심을 붙들라. 그러면 무의식적으로 그 핵심을 표현하게 될 것이다.

당신의 메시지에 당신 먼저 은혜를 받아야 한다. 그러면 그 만큼 다른 사람에게 은혜를 끼칠 수 있다.

당신이 성경에 익숙하다고 생각하며 안일하여질 때 하나님은 주의 천사들을 통해 당신의 옆구리를 찌르신다. 그러한 때 만일 성령으로 충만하지 않다면 당신은 당신을 찌르는 그들을 절대로 ‘천사들’이라고 부르지 않을 것이다. 그러나 당신에게 “제대로 하라”고 말하는 못마땅한 그 사람들이 사실은 하나님이 보내신 천사들이다.

Preparation

It is by thinking with your pen in hand that you will get to the heart of your subject.

“The heart of the righteous studieth to answer” (Proverbs 15:28). To give your congregation extemporaneous thinking, i.e., thinking without study, is an insult—ponderous “nothings.” The preacher should give his congregation the result of strenuous thinking in un-studied, extemporaneous speech.

Extemporaneous speech is not extemporaneous thinking, but speech that has been so studied that you are possessed unconsciously with what you are saying.

Never get a studied form; prepare yourself mentally, morally, and spiritually, and you need never fear.

The great thing is not to hunt for texts, but to live in the big comprehensive truths of the Bible and texts will hunt you.

To talk about “getting a message,” is a mistake. It is preparation of myself that is required more than of my message.

Don’t go to your Bible in a yawning mood.

As a student of the Word of God, keep your mind and heart busy with the great truths concerning God, the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Atonement, sin, suffering, etc.

Slay on the threshold of your mind the thing that makes you sit down mentally and say, “I can’t.” Why be saved and sanctified in a rusty indolent case?

In impromptu speaking, begin naturally, and the secret of beginning naturally is to forget you are religious. Many wear a crushing religious garb.

Beware of detaching yourself from your theme in order to heed the way you present it. Never be afraid of expressing what is really you.

To develop your expression in public you must do a vast amount of writing in private. Write out your problems before God. Go direct to Him about everything

Time spent on the great fundamental revelations given by the Holy Spirit is apt to be looked upon as a waste of time—“We must get to practical work.”

The work we do in preparation is meant to get our minds into such order that they are at the service of God for His inspiration.

Conscious inspiration is mercifully rare or we would make inspiration our god.

Don’t chisel your subject too much. Trust the reality of your nature and the reality of your subject.

The discipline of your own powers is a very precious acquirement in the service of God; it delivers you from breathless uncertainty and possible hysterics. Learn to respect the findings of your own mind.

Always check private delight in preparation. Close your preparation with prayer and leave it with God till wanted.

When you speak, abandon yourself in confidence; don’t try to recall fine points in preparation.

The burning heart while Jesus talkswith us and opens up the Scriptures to us is a blessed experience, but the burning heart will die down to ashes unless we keep perennially right with God.

Spiritual insight is in accordance with the development of heart-purity.

Every domain of our life which comes under the apprehension of the Spirit of God is a call to cultivate that particular domain for Him. The trouble is that we won’t break up the new soil of our lives for God.

Spiritual sloth must be the greatest grief to the Holy Ghost. Sloth has always a moral reason, not a physical one; the self-indulgent nature must be slothful.

Learn to fast over your subject in private; do the mechanical work and trust God for the inspirational in delivery.

Don’t memorise what you have to say or you will serve up “cauld kale het.”*

In order to expound a passage, live in it well beforehand.

Keep yourself full with reading. Reading gives you a vocabulary.

Don’t read to remember; read to realise.

The speaker without notes must have two things entirely at his command—the Bible and his mother tongue.

In impromptu speaking, never try to recall, always plunge.

Let the centre of your subject grip you, then you will express its heart unconsciously.

Get moved by your message, and it will move others in a corresponding way.

Watch how God by His angels elbows you out of the hour you thought you were going to get with your Bible—only you will never call them “angels” unless you are filled with the Holy Spirit. “That objectionable person” was really an angel of God to you, saying “Get this thing worked out.’
